Why this is the size people mean

It is not an accident that this diameter turns up everywhere.

2.25 inches is the diameter that has been used for campaign pins, band merch, conference badges and school spirit buttons for decades, which means it reads as a button on sight. Nobody has to work out what they are looking at.

It is also the smallest face that comfortably holds two ideas at once. A logo plus a short line of text, a name plus a role, a photo plus a date. On the 1.5 inch one of those two usually has to go; here they both fit with room to breathe, because this face carries 2.25 times the print area of the 1.5 inch.

And it stays wearable. It is big enough to be seen across a table and small enough to sit flat on a shirt, a jacket lapel, an apron or a tote bag without sagging.

Is 2.25 inch the right size for you?

Two questions decide it: how much has to be on the button, and how far away it has to be read from.

Look at another size for

  • A collar, a cap or a lanyard badge holder, where 1.5 inch sits better.
  • A message that has to be read across a room rather than across a table. That is 3 inch.
  • A group photo where a specific face has to be recognized, or a dense QR code. Both want the larger face.
  • Several paragraphs of anything. No button is a leaflet, and this one is not either.

Crossing the safe circle

There is genuinely useful room inside the safe circle at this diameter: a logo at about two thirds of the safe width with a line of text beneath it is a layout that works over and over. This face will hold a short sentence, but not one in a light weight at a small point size. Fewer, heavier words beat more, finer ones on a curved surface.
